  1. I just saw a praying mantis for the first time ever in my garden. It really does look like a part of the plant. I went to brush it off, thinking it was a stray leaf and it jumped. Then I jumped. But we both survived, and I was fascinated by how clearly I could see the movement of its jaws. Much larger overall than I expected from photos. Very cool insect. Worthy of being the central player in your poem.
